Caitlyn Moony shares her journey of relocating to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018 in search of a better life. Despite her initial excitement and admiration for the city’s natural beauty and charm, she soon found herself struggling to adapt to the reality of living in Vancouver. Facing challenges such as job insecurity, high living costs, and a sense of isolation, she began to resent the city for not meeting her expectations.

Moony’s experience highlights the difficulties of starting fresh in a new place without established connections or local experience. Feeling disconnected and lonely, she longed for the sense of community and belonging she had experienced in previous locations. This feeling was exacerbated by the onset of the pandemic, which further isolated her and intensified her feelings of boredom and suffocation.

Ultimately, Moony decided to leave Vancouver and return to London, where she felt a sense of familiarity and vibrancy that she had been missing. However, upon reflection, she realized that Vancouver had quietly shaped her into a more introspective and grounded individual. Despite its imperfections and challenges, she now sees Vancouver as a place where she can find peace and self-discovery.

As she returns to Vancouver, Moony acknowledges the city’s flaws but expresses a desire to reconnect with it and embrace its unique characteristics. She hopes to rediscover her place in the city and build a relationship based on mutual understanding and respect.
