Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk embarked on a six-month mission to the International Space Station (ISS) 11 days ago. In his recent interaction with reporters from space, Kutryk shared his excitement, describing his experience so far as enjoyable.
Adjusting to life in space, Kutryk mentioned the challenges of relearning basic tasks like sleeping and eating in a weightless environment. He likened the process to being a toddler learning simple life skills again, finding it both frustrating and rewarding.
Despite the fun aspect, Kutryk has been diligently working on various science experiments, including those focusing on mental health and monitoring his vital signs. This mission marks Kutryk’s first venture into space, following closely after fellow Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen’s involvement in the Artemis II mission.
Expressing hope for Canadians to view this endeavor as a pathway to innovation and a brighter future, Kutryk emphasized the significance of Canada’s participation in space exploration. He highlighted the collaborative effort involving industry, academia, and commercial entities from Canada, underscoring the importance of pushing boundaries in space technology development.
During the Q&A session, Kutryk mentioned passing over Vancouver and Quebec, appreciating the opportunity to observe his home country from space. He also marveled at the breathtaking sight of the northern lights. Noting a weight loss of five pounds since arriving at the ISS, Kutryk emphasized the importance of exercise and nutrition in space living conditions.
Several experiments onboard, including the Canadian project “T-Bone,” utilizing 3D technology to study astronauts’ bone health, focus on astronaut well-being. Kutryk reiterated Canada’s integral role in space exploration, emphasizing the long-standing legacy and the benefits derived from such missions, aiming to sustain Canada’s strong presence in space exploration.
Overall, Kutryk’s mission signifies Canada’s commitment to advancing space exploration and fostering innovation for the future.
