“Disqualified Giant Pumpkin Stuns at Pumpkinfest”

Date:

A giant pumpkin weighing 1,711 pounds grown by Jeff Warner from Englehart, Ontario, nearly clinched the top prize at Pumpkinfest in Port Elgin. However, he was disqualified due to a small soft spot found on the pumpkin. Despite knowing the strict competition rules, Warner decided to make the nine-hour trip to the fair with his giant gourd. He attempted to mitigate the soft spot’s impact by scraping it, but the hole continued to enlarge during the journey. Upon arrival, a judge informed him that the hole exceeded the maximum allowable width of three inches, leading to disqualification.

Although disappointed, Warner acknowledged the importance of adhering to the rules. The winning pumpkin weighed 1,542 pounds, significantly lighter than his massive entry. Nonetheless, Warner expressed pride in the effort he invested in nurturing his pumpkins, aiming to surpass his own records each year. Despite missing out on the top prize, Warner’s giant pumpkin became a local attraction, with families visiting to admire and take photos with it.

Looking ahead, Warner plans to transport the pumpkin to a polar habitat where it will be fed to polar bears, giving it a unique second purpose.
