Chaos within Kent council under Reform’s leadership poses a significant risk to public safety, according to the Fire Brigades Union (FBU). Reform UK secured a majority in Kent County Council in May but has since suspended nine councillors, including key members of the fire authority. As a result, Chief Executive Anne Millington faces budget constraints without the necessary approvals, hampering the fire authority’s operations.
The FBU, representing firefighters nationwide, condemned the situation as a disarray that endangers public safety, labeling council leader Linden Kemkaran as “captain chaos.” Despite requests for a meeting from local union representatives to address the issues, no response has been received.
Recent controversy arose when Ms. Kemkaran instructed disgruntled Reform UK colleagues to accept her decisions, leading to the suspension of four councillors after a leaked video of her remarks surfaced. Steve Wright, FBU general secretary, emphasized the critical impact of governance on fire and rescue services’ effectiveness, urging the council to restore accountability structures.
Joe Weir, FBU executive council member for the South East, highlighted the dedication of Kent firefighters and the necessity for functional political leadership. Criticizing the lack of attention and responsiveness since Reform’s council takeover, the FBU continues to advocate for firefighter safety and public welfare.
A recent incident saw a Kent committee meeting, tasked with addressing families requesting school transport support, canceled due to the suspension of its chair. Kent County Council, one of the UK’s largest, manages a substantial annual budget of £2.5 billion.
