Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has expressed strong dismay over the situation where thousands of metric tonnes of aid intended to feed starving Palestinians are stranded in a warehouse. The aid, consisting of essentials like wheat flour, tinned goods, yeast, and sugar, amounting to around 5,000 pallets or 4,000 metric tonnes, is currently held up at a World Food Programme depot near Amman, Jordan, due to Israeli restrictions.

Despite there being enough aid in Jordan to facilitate the transportation of 150 trucks daily into Gaza for three months, the primary crossing from Jordan to the West Bank has been blocked for goods vehicles by Israeli authorities. Cooper emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the wheat alone in the warehouse could provide sustenance for 700,000 people for a month, underscoring the critical need to expedite aid delivery to Gaza, where children are still facing hunger.

Efforts to increase aid access to Gaza have been hindered by restrictions, with NGOs accusing the Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, of obstructing aid shipments and impeding charity organizations from delivering assistance to the region. Cooper, alongside the UN, allied nations, and a US-led coordinating committee, is advocating for a swift diplomatic intervention to ensure a steady flow of aid into Gaza.

The imperative to act before winter is paramount, as over a million individuals in Gaza require shelter, and essential supplies like warm clothing and shelter kits are currently stockpiled in charity warehouses, including those managed by organizations like Unicef. Cooper stressed the need to open the Jordanian route promptly to facilitate the movement of aid, emphasizing the importance of not just temporary relief but also long-term reconstruction efforts to provide sustainable housing solutions for the affected population.

In light of the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Musonda Kasonde, Unicef’s deputy representative of operations, highlighted the urgent need for assistance before the harsh winter conditions set in. Expressing the critical nature of the situation, Kasonde emphasized the necessity for immediate action to provide essentials such as shoes and warm coats to vulnerable children, urging authorities to remove barriers and expedite aid delivery processes.
