A video capturing a daylight street ambush outside a phone shop has surfaced, depicting an off-duty police officer shooting a suspected robber and aiding in the apprehension of another individual.

The incident occurred on Avenida Paula Ferreira, a street in the northern region of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, yesterday. Reports from authorities detail how Luiz Fernando Souza Nunes de Viveiros, the off-duty officer, was present inside a mobile phone store when he witnessed two men confronting a delivery driver who had just exited the establishment.

Allegedly, one of the suspects declared a robbery, prompting the officer to draw his firearm and discharge a shot. The footage reveals the officer firing at one of the suspects, identified as 26-year-old Michael Santos Preto, hitting him in the back. Preto succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The second suspect, identified as 40-year-old Joao Renato Macedo dos Reis, attempted to flee on foot but was pursued and subdued by members of the public nearby. Despite trying to use a firearm against the officer, the weapon malfunctioned, as per the official report.

Following the incident, the area was secured for investigations, with forensic teams arriving at the scene to collect evidence. The Sao Paulo State Department of Public Security confirmed that the suspects resisted arrest, leading to the death of one suspect on-site and the arrest of the other at the scene.
