Prince Andrew was informed by King Charles in a brief phone call that his role as a senior royal had come to an end. The King called for a meeting in response to new allegations involving Andrew’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein and suspected Chinese spies. Sources close to the royal family revealed that the King was exasperated by the ongoing scandals and instructed Andrew to take decisive action.
After consultation with his family, particularly Prince William, the King summoned Andrew and emphasized the necessity for him to step down from his prominent positions. Consequently, Andrew agreed to relinquish all his titles except for prince, renouncing his titles as Duke of York and a Knight of the Garter. This decision followed the recent revelations surrounding the Epstein scandal, including the forthcoming memoir by Virginia Giuffre, the victim who accused Andrew of sexual misconduct.
Giuffre’s family welcomed Andrew’s decision, calling it a triumph for Virginia and urging further action to remove his prince title. In her memoir, Giuffre detailed instances of alleged sexual encounters with Andrew at various locations, including Epstein’s properties in New York and the US Virgin Islands. The memoir also exposed Andrew’s attempts to silence Giuffre with a gag order to protect the Queen’s reputation.
Despite his consistent denial of the accusations, Andrew settled a lawsuit with Giuffre in February 2022. Her family viewed Andrew’s title relinquishment as a significant step towards justice for Epstein’s victims. Andrew’s involvement in a recent China spy scandal further added to the controversies surrounding him, raising questions about his associations with individuals linked to espionage activities.
Following the decision to give up his titles, Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also no longer use her Duchess of York title. Buckingham Palace refrained from providing any comments on the matter.
