A man convicted of fraud, known as William Smith or Billy, was mistakenly released from prison due to a clerical error in his sentencing. Smith had been sentenced to 45 months for multiple fraud offenses at Croydon Crown Court. However, confusion arose when his sentence was incorrectly entered into the system alongside another individual with the same surname.

Smith appeared in court with his co-defendant, Joseph Smith, who received a suspended sentence and was allowed to leave the court premises. In contrast, Smith, who was held in custody at HMP Wandsworth, received a custodial sentence via a video link.

The miscommunication occurred when the sentences were inputted into the digital system, resulting in Smith being mistakenly granted a suspended sentence. Despite attempts to rectify the error, Smith was erroneously released on Monday before the mistake could be remedied.

Authorities are actively searching for Smith, who was last seen wearing specific clothing, and has ties to Woking but could be anywhere in Surrey. This incident follows another case of mistaken release involving an Algerian national named Brahim Kaddour Cherif from HMP Wandsworth, prompting urgent police efforts to locate him.
