Skywatchers in the Americas, Europe, and Africa were treated to a mesmerizing sight of a partial lunar eclipse on Thursday evening extending into Friday. Dubbed the “almost blood moon,” the lunar eclipse reached its peak just past midnight Eastern Time, with Earth’s shadow covering 96 percent of the moon’s visible surface, resulting in a near-total lunar eclipse. This celestial event was a rare spectacle as the next lunar eclipse is not expected until New Year’s Eve in 2028.

In Canada, the full moon during the lunar eclipse phase illuminated the night sky over Vancouver. The stunning views of the partial lunar eclipse were also captured in Osborne Village, Winnipeg, and at the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant in Toronto.

Across the Americas, observers marveled at the lunar eclipse, with people capturing the celestial event at the George Observatory in Needville, Texas, and behind the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The golden edge of the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans provided a picturesque backdrop for the partial lunar eclipse, while in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, the moon appeared above the Mexican flag during the eclipse. In Salvador, Bahia state, Brazil, the moon rose behind a coconut palm tree during the partial lunar eclipse.

In Europe, the moon during the partial lunar eclipse was a sight to behold over Warsaw, with people enjoying the celestial show from Parliament Hill in London. A plane approaching for landing in Lisbon added a unique perspective to the partial lunar eclipse, and the reddish hue of the eclipse was visible in the night sky in Goutz, France.
