University of Waterloo PhD candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah, though not a Nobel Prize recipient, proudly holds an Ig Nobel Prize. These awards, a comical spin on the esteemed Nobel Prizes, honor the most unconventional and innovative academic research. Thurairajah and his team secured the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a urinal that prevents splashing.
The celebratory moment of victory was shared when Thurairajah’s supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, surprised him with the news. Together, they celebrated with wine from espresso cups in Pan’s office. The team experimented with various urinal designs, such as the Nautilus and Cornocopia, to achieve a splash-free solution, ultimately favoring the Nautilus for its reduced splash and easier maintenance.
Attending the ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his team sported bright yellow raincoats, prepared to receive accolades among their quirky scientific peers. Despite the unconventional nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the importance of their work in enhancing public spaces like bathrooms.
In addition to Thurairajah’s team, other Canadian researchers were recognized at the event. University of Toronto researchers received the Economics Prize for their study on the tendency of affluent individuals to take candy from children. McGill University scientists contributed to the Technology Prize-winning research on using mosquito proboscises for high-resolution 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Awards, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns. Thurairajah highlighted the international nature of the scientific community and the value of global collaboration. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate with researchers from around the world and emphasized the importance of inclusivity in scientific endeavors.
