I have a vivid memory of the day I assembled my very first personal computer. The intricate task of connecting all the tiny front panel wires and the anticipation as I pressed the power button for the initial startup are still fresh in my mind.
Having grown up playing games on consoles like the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360, transitioning to building a gaming PC sparked a newfound passion for the hobby. Not only did it enable me to experience games at significantly higher visual quality, but it also introduced me to new gaming genres like MMOs and RTS games.
For nearly a decade, my primary gaming platform has been the PC, albeit to a certain extent. However, when gaming shifted from being a pastime to a primary source of income, my preference underwent a significant transformation.
The transition to spending long hours staring at the same screen for work and leisure purposes had a profound impact on my enjoyment of PC gaming. Even with a clear separation between work and play areas, the prolonged exposure to computer monitors left me feeling overly sedentary.
Console gaming, on the other hand, stands out for its streamlined game startup process, unlike some PC games in 2026, which often require intricate troubleshooting akin to cybersecurity tasks. Dealing with issues such as lengthy shader installations and random crashes frequently led me to spend more time seeking solutions on Reddit than actually playing games.
My lifestyle as a frequent traveler and remote worker only exacerbated the challenges of finding dedicated time for PC gaming, resulting in a mounting backlog of unplayed games.
In 2023, my gaming experience took a significant turn when I invested in a Steam Deck OLED. The enhanced features over the previous LCD model allowed me to carry my extensive game library on the go, marking a pivotal shift in my gaming habits.
While the Steam Deck may not support the most demanding titles, games from the PlayStation 4 era are easily playable. Over the past two years, the Deck has contributed significantly to reducing my game backlog, accounting for half of my total Steam gameplay hours.
The convenience of the quick resume feature on the Deck has been a game-changer, particularly during travel, enabling seamless transitions between gameplay sessions across different locations.
For games exceeding the Steam Deck’s capabilities, cloud gaming services have proven to be a viable solution. Utilizing Xbox Cloud Gaming via the Edge browser on the Deck, I completed a full playthrough of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, leading me to consider exploring cloud gaming options on other platforms like the PlayStation Portal.
The versatility of the Steam Deck has reignited my interest in traditional console gaming, prompting me to embrace handheld gaming once again. This shift in preference influenced my decision to acquire a Switch 2, enhancing my gaming experiences, such as revisiting Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at 60fps.
Despite my enduring fondness for PC gaming and titles like Battlefield 6, ARC Raiders, and Counter-Strike 2, handheld gaming has revolutionized how I approach gaming, making it easier to enjoy and complete games. The resurgence of handheld gaming has rekindled my passion for a hobby that was gradually losing its appeal, aligning with the strategic focus of major gaming companies like Xbox and Sony on handheld gaming devices.
