A young adult sustained severe injuries following an incident where he was set on fire, believed to be part of an ongoing dispute between two families in a small town. Jacob Thompson, aged 19, suffered burns covering 32% of his body, with third-degree burns on his face, torso, arms, back, and legs after the incident in Coonabarabran, New South Wales, Australia, on October 13.

Reports suggest that he was targeted by a group of individuals who doused him with a flammable substance, causing him to catch fire. Passersby intervened, extinguishing the flames, and he was promptly taken to intensive care for treatment.

Authorities suspect that the immolation was a result of a longstanding feud between the families involved in the rural Australian community. New South Wales Police indicated that the attack on Jacob was linked to the ongoing dispute. According to the Australian Daily Telegraph, Aaron Valette, 19, allegedly threatened Jacob with burning before pouring a liquid on him and setting him on fire. Following the incident, Jacob’s family relocated due to safety concerns and have been supporting him at Concord Hospital in Sydney, where he was airlifted post the attack.

The severity of Jacob’s injuries has necessitated extensive medical care, including being induced into a coma on life support. His family described the incident as deeply traumatic, leaving lasting physical and emotional scars. Jacob’s recovery journey involves ongoing medical procedures, rehabilitation, and the need to move to a secure environment for his well-being.

Despite the challenges, Jacob’s family reported some progress in his condition, although he continues to face breathing difficulties and eye injuries. They mentioned his positive attitude in coping with the situation.

In connection with the incident, police arrested Aaron Valette, Mavis Chatfield, 45, and a 17-year-old girl. Valette faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and affray, while Chatfield was charged with affray. Both individuals were denied bail. The teenage girl was released pending further investigation.
