British tennis player Dan Evans expressed his frustration in 2022 after being left out of the doubles lineup for the Davis Cup, hinting that he might quit the team. Despite his successful history with the British team, including a victory in the 2015 Davis Cup, Evans felt insulted by the selection decision. He emphasized that his lack of regular doubles play on the tour should not have been a determining factor.
In a statement to the i, Evans voiced his disappointment and stated that he had never been chosen to play doubles in the Davis Cup, despite his confidence in his doubles skills. He suggested that team selection should be based on game style compatibility rather than just doubles rankings.
Following his exclusion from the doubles lineup at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals in Austria, where he was limited to singles matches, Evans expressed his frustration at not being given the opportunity to play doubles. He mentioned having discussions with the team captain, Leon Smith, and pondered his future involvement with the team if the desired results were not achieved.
In a subsequent match against Colombia, Evans teamed up with Neal Skupski and secured a doubles victory, contributing to Britain’s overall success in the Davis Cup. However, Evans later missed the 2023 finals due to an injury.
Meanwhile, in the 2025 Davis Cup Finals, Britain faced a disappointing defeat to Japan in the qualifying round, resulting in their absence from the ongoing competition. Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led their team to the semi-finals with impressive performances, defeating Austria. Berrettini and Cobolli’s victories secured Italy’s spot in the last-four showdown against Belgium.
