President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine expressed concerns that holding an election during the ongoing conflict with Russia could lead to the country’s division. Zelenskyy’s remarks came following former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov’s call for a wartime poll, which sparked controversy. Despite protests over Fedorov’s dismissal, his proposal for an election faced skepticism due to legal restrictions, security issues, and logistical challenges posed by the conflict.

Zelenskyy emphasized that conducting elections amidst the war could be detrimental, citing legal prohibitions and the complex circumstances involving millions of Ukrainians affected by the conflict. While acknowledging public desire for political change, Zelenskyy stressed the need for stability and security before considering elections. He highlighted the importance of ending the war and safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty to prevent further division.

The president also addressed the rift with Fedorov, praising their past collaboration but expressing disagreement with Fedorov’s recent actions. Fedorov, known for modernizing Ukraine’s military capabilities, was dismissed after disagreements with military leadership. Zelenskyy’s comments shed light on challenges related to defense decisions and inaccurate information that impacted diplomatic interactions, including an incident involving SpaceX’s Starlink technology and a conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Zelenskyy’s statements reflect a cautious approach to electoral processes during a time of conflict, prioritizing national unity and security. The ongoing tensions underscore the complexities of governance in Ukraine amid external threats and internal political dynamics.
