Sir Sadiq Khan applauds a significant setback for Donald Trump as Democrat Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election in New York City.
Despite President Trump’s support for former governor Andrew Cuomo, labeling Mamdani a “communist,” and threatening to cut funding to New York, Mamdani emerged victorious over Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Sir Sadiq praised Mamdani’s historic win, noting he will be the city’s first Muslim mayor and the first of South Asian descent, set to take office on January 1.
In a message, Sir Sadiq highlighted the choice New Yorkers faced between hope and fear, emphasizing the victory of hope, akin to London’s experience.
The endorsement of Mamdani by Sir Sadiq follows a prolonged feud between the London mayor and Trump, with Trump’s disparaging remarks towards Sadiq since 2015.
Mamdani’s victory speech included a direct challenge to Trump, urging him to listen to the loud cheers of supporters and emphasizing New York’s immigrant roots and leadership.
The city’s Board of Elections reported record voter turnout, with over two million ballots cast, marking the largest participation in over five decades.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson expressed limited interest in American politics when asked about Mamdani’s win.
