The leading health authority in the UK has raised an alarm following a concerning trend showing a significant increase in flu cases among young children.

The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) has observed a continuous rise in flu cases among schoolchildren nationwide, indicating a potential shift in the flu season timeframe. In the 42nd week of 2025, the agency noted that flu activity is now “above baseline” in certain indicators.

According to health experts, the rate of flu positivity has surged by approximately 6.1%, which is higher than the previous week. Concurrently, there has been a rise in hospitalizations due to the virus.

The severity of these cases has also escalated, with hospitalizations climbing from 1.29 to 1.73 per 100,000 individuals within the same week, as per UKHSA data. The agency has suggested that the spike in cases hints at the potential onset of an earlier flu season.

While the surge in cases is predominantly affecting schoolchildren, epidemiologists have cautioned that the virus could easily spread to other more vulnerable segments of the population.

Dr. Jamie Lopez Bernal, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of vaccinating children to prevent severe illness in others. He stressed the need for parents to ensure their children receive the nasal spray vaccine offered in schools and advised contacting local school immunization teams for missed vaccinations.

Furthermore, Dr. Lopez Bernal highlighted the significance of other population groups getting vaccinated as flu activity continues in the UK. He emphasized that all eligible individuals should promptly avail themselves of the free flu vaccine to mitigate the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.

The UKHSA’s warning comes amid concerns that this year’s flu season could surpass the previous year, with increased GP visits, hospital admissions, and ICU stays for flu-like illnesses compared to 2024. The agency attributes the previous wave to the H1N1 strain of influenza A followed by influenza B, extending the season into March.
