A woman’s life took a sudden turn when she discovered a cancerous lump earlier this year. Carol Butterly, residing in Glasgow, found the tumor while sitting down post-shower on the day after Valentine’s Day in 2025. Seeking her husband’s opinion, she promptly scheduled an appointment and was seen the next day.
In an interview with Glasgow Live, the 69-year-old recounted, “I’d just come out the shower and sat down in my chair when I felt a lump. I asked my partner if he thought it felt right, and he said I should make an appointment. I phoned the doctor straight away and was seen the next day. Things moved swiftly after that – mammogram, biopsy, surgery. It was a whirlwind.”
Initially expected to undergo a simple lump removal, further tests revealed another lump, necessitating a complete mastectomy, as reported by the Record. Despite the challenging diagnosis, Carol’s resilience and humor remained intact, helping her navigate through this difficult phase.
Carol continued her treatment regimen with medication and regular check-ups, feeling positive about her progress. She emphasized, “I’m feeling great now, thank goodness. I just take each day as it comes and keep moving forward.” Throughout her journey, Beatson Cancer Charity provided significant support.
Reflecting on her experience, Carol stressed the importance of self-checks and early intervention during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She transformed her ordeal into a book titled “Didn’t Expect That, Did You,” with all proceeds benefiting the Beatson Cancer Charity.
Her message for Breast Cancer Awareness Month remains clear: “Please check yourself. Even if you’re not sure, get it looked at. It’s much better to find something early. And keep positive – don’t let appointments run your life. Fit them into your life, and keep living.”
