A man, allegedly intoxicated, is accused of fatally running over his girlfriend’s brother during a family birthday celebration. The incident occurred after a heated altercation at the party where the suspect, identified as Stephen Bates, had been consuming a mix of alcoholic beverages.
According to testimony at Liverpool Crown Court, Bates, appearing visibly drunk, had engaged in a physical altercation with the victim, Martin O’Donovan, before being driven away from the scene to calm down. However, Bates later returned in his car and intentionally struck Mr. O’Donovan with his vehicle.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene where Bates had exhibited aggressive behavior and issued threats towards the victim. Despite efforts to defuse the situation and take Bates home, he continued to make menacing statements, including threats to harm the victim.
Tragically, the confrontation escalated when Bates drove back to the location, resulting in Mr. O’Donovan being trapped under the car. Despite rescue attempts by family members, Mr. O’Donovan sustained severe head injuries and later succumbed to them in the hospital.
The defendant, Bates, has denied the charge of murder but admitted to manslaughter. The trial is ongoing as further details unfold.
