Keir Starmer has cautioned about the necessity for “challenging yet equitable” choices at the Budget amidst a gloomy economic environment.

During a private discussion with Labour MPs, the Prime Minister highlighted the severe long-term consequences of Tory austerity and a flawed Brexit agreement, stating they are more dire than anticipated. Nevertheless, he affirmed that a Labour administration would prioritize Labour principles, safeguarding the NHS and enhancing the standard of living for struggling citizens.

The upcoming Budget, to be presented by Chancellor Rachel Reeves on November 26, faces a fiscal deficit estimated at £20 billion to £30 billion, challenging her adherence to financial regulations. Speculation mounts over potential income tax hikes in a possible deviation from Labour’s electoral promises following Keir Starmer’s recent refusal to reiterate the party’s commitment to shielding workers from tax increases.

Addressing the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP), Keir Starmer emphasized that the Budget would reflect Labour’s core values, pledging to fortify public services like the NHS, reduce national debt, and alleviate the cost of living for the populace. Despite the UK’s earlier economic growth success within the G7, the Budget is set against a complex economic backdrop.

Keir Starmer condemned the Tories for their economic management, cautioning against trusting them in the future. He also criticized Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, warning that their proposed cuts could jeopardize the NHS, emphasizing their preference for benefiting billionaires over the working populace.

Dame Emily Thornberry, a senior Labour MP, stressed the importance of unity and discipline among Labour MPs in the lead-up to the Budget. While advocating for MPs to share constructive ideas privately with Rachel Reeves, she underscored the value of maintaining a cohesive front publicly.
