Saturday’s violent stabbing incident on a train in Cambridgeshire has been confirmed by the Home Secretary as not linked to terrorism. Shabana Mahmood provided an update stating that two individuals, both British-born British nationals, were apprehended at the scene in Huntingdon. She commended the rapid response of emergency services and lauded the courage displayed by staff and passengers aboard the LNER train.
Authorities reported that a 32-year-old British male and a 35-year-old man of Caribbean descent, also a British national, are in custody following the attack. Eleven individuals sustained injuries, with nine initially in critical condition, after the disturbing assault on a London-bound train that occurred after it stopped in Peterborough.
In a tweet, Ms. Mahmood expressed her thoughts and gratitude towards the victims, their families, and the responding agencies including the British Transport Police, Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the East of England Ambulance Service. She highlighted the non-terrorist nature of the attack and the ongoing investigation with regular updates from the police.
Superintendent John Loveless of the British Transport Police described the event as “shocking” and refrained from speculating on the motive behind the stabbings. The swift arrest of the suspects within eight minutes of the incident was noted. Out of the 11 injured individuals, four have been discharged with no indication of terrorism involvement according to Mr. Loveless.
Despite the initial involvement of counter-terrorism policing in the investigation, British Transport Police emphasized that there is currently no evidence to suggest a terrorist motive in the incident. The distressing attack transpired on a train departing from Peterborough station in Cambridgeshire, where police reportedly used a Taser on a man wielding a large knife.
British Transport Police disclosed that two individuals have been detained in connection with the attack onboard the service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross on Saturday evening.
