Recent data suggests that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fake customer service numbers via search engines or AI tools.
Virgin Media has highlighted that criminals are taking advantage of AI technology to present consumers with fake phone numbers and websites when seeking to contact reputable brands. This deceptive tactic enables fraudsters to gather personal data and carry out scams.
As more people rely on AI-generated search results for information, hackers find an opportunity to deceive unsuspecting users.
To protect themselves, Virgin advises customers to only use authentic service numbers provided on official company websites, apps, or bills. For those needing assistance from O2 or Virgin Media, calling 202 from an O2 device or 150 from a landline is recommended.
It is crucial to exercise caution when dealing with numbers obtained from search engines, social media, or AI tools. Additionally, individuals should refrain from sharing security codes or personal information with unknown callers, regardless of their claimed identity.
